Jacob Deems is passionate about transforming education through innovation and the elimination of systemic racial achievement debt. After completing a B.A. in English Writing at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, he worked with special education students in the primary grades, gaining experience with diverse learners. Shortly after this he completed his Masters of Arts in Teaching at National-Louis University in Chicago. After a move to Minneapolis, he began teaching middle school English where he helped lead a digital personalized learning initiative and a district strategic plan. Next, he transitioned to coaching and evaluating teachers, focusing specifically on racial equity practices in pedagogy as well as the classroom environment. During this time he began pursuing his Ph.D in Educational Policy and Leadership at the University of Minnesota. After moving back to the Chicago area, Jacob continued to teach both English and social studies at an International Baccalaureate school where he also served as the MYP Coordinator. Jacob believes strongly in the power of education to transform lives and is excited to bring that passion to Ryan Banks Academy.
